The ancient town of Troyes in Champagne is often dubbed the most romantic town in France. It offers so much from culture, to gastronomy, to history and glamour. With it’s cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and gothic church, you see why it gets the romantic nick name. Troyes is perfect place to be based to explore the heartland on a Champagne weekend. We’ve highlighted our favourite things to do (and places to stay) while in this beautiful city.
A short drive from Troyes City Centre is the rather grand Champagne House of Drappier. Here you can taste some of the superb Drappier champagnes, visit the cellars and learn about it’s history, which can be traced back to the local Clairevoux Abbey. The grounds and the house are beautiful and is the perfect stop on a luxury champagne holiday.
Just around the corner, Clairevoux Abbey has a rich history. It dates back to the Medieval times founding by an abbot, later canonised as Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. A hub for wine making in for Champagne Ardanne region. Clairvaux ceased to be a monastery at the time of the French Revolution and was used for a while as a prison. Located in the Champagne vineyards this is a beautiful spot to reflect and learn more.
A firm favourite of ours, nestled in a narrow street of Ruelle des Chats, between the half wooden houses is Chez Felix, is a modern restaurant that serves locally sourced food. The menu serves modern classics and the décor is brasserie chic. There is a lovely terrace area overlooking a manicured garden – but you’ll need to book in advance for a seat there in the summer.
Located in the historic heart of the Medieval town of Troyes, the 4 **** hotel Le Champ des Oiseaux, is situated at the foot of the Cathedral. It has been brilliantly renovated with the medieval structure and is in keeping with the local architecture and cobbled streets. They offer an option of rooms, some over looing the terrace others overlooking the city. They have an outdoor pool, a wellness room (which you can privately book with a bottle of champagne!) and the breakfasts are delicious. A perfect base for a luxury champagne holiday!
